Post-construction cleaning

Cleaning Up After the Renovation or Build Is Done

When the contractors leave, the project is finished, but the space may not be ready to use yet, with dust and debris left behind. Post-construction cleaning (also written post construction cleaning), also called after-construction cleaning, renovation cleaning or construction cleanup, is the detailed cleaning that turns a newly built or renovated property into a space you can use.

TCS Cleaning Service handles the dust and debris removal after a remodel or new build, in the home or property you are about to move into, list or hand over. Our cleaners are insured, bonded and background-checked, and the work is backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

We serve Frederick, Urbana, New Market, Clarksburg and Washington, DC. If the property is empty and keys are changing hands, a move-out or move-in cleaning may be the better fit, and for a lived-in home, a deep cleaning resets it top to bottom.

Post-construction cleaning in Frederick, MD: dust, ventilation and what the EPA says after a renovation

Last updated: · Written by the TCS Cleaning Service team in Frederick, MD

Post-construction cleaning is the detailed cleaning that follows a renovation or new build. TCS Cleaning Service clears the dust and debris left by remodels and new builds throughout the Frederick area and in Washington, DC, with free quotes. This guide explains why construction dust is different from everyday dust, what the EPA recommends for ventilation and cleanup after remodeling, what the federal lead rule says about homes built before 1978, and how to time your cleaning, so you can plan the last step of your project with the facts in hand.

What is post-construction cleaning, and how is it different from a regular or deep cleaning?

Short answer: It is a detailed cleaning that follows building work and clears the dust and debris it leaves, instead of everyday buildup.

Building work leaves dust and leftovers behind, so the cleaning that follows has a different job from a routine visit. Post-construction cleaning is also called renovation cleaning, after-construction cleaning or construction cleanup, and after a new build it is sometimes called new construction cleaning. A regular cleaning keeps a home clean on a schedule, and a deep cleaning resets a lived-in home. For an empty property whose keys are changing hands, a move-out cleaning fits better.

Why is construction dust different from everyday dust?

Short answer: Cutting, sanding and drilling can create very fine particles, including respirable crystalline silica from stone, concrete, brick and mortar.

OSHA explains that respirable crystalline silica consists of very small particles, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand, created when stone, rock, concrete, brick, block and mortar are cut, sawn, ground, drilled or crushed. OSHA lists silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease among the health risks for exposed workers, and has separate silica standards for construction and general industry. Those rules protect the workers on the job. If your project involved cutting or drilling those materials, tell us when you request a quote. We do not claim specialized hazardous-dust removal.

What does the EPA recommend to keep dust under control while remodeling?

Short answer: The EPA recommends avoiding and containing dust, ventilating the work area and cleaning up the site before occupants return.

The EPA’s remodeling guide says to avoid creating dust and to contain what cannot be avoided, with low-dust work practices such as misting surfaces with water before sanding or scraping. It explains that exhaust ventilation from the work area helps remove dust and, by creating a pressure barrier, keeps pollutants from spreading to the rest of the home. It also says to keep occupants, especially children, away from the work area and to clean up the work site before they return. For jobs that make a lot of dust, such as demolition, the EPA describes “isolation,” where the work area is sealed with no direct access to occupied areas. These are recommendations to share with your contractor.

How long should you ventilate after new paint or flooring?

Short answer: The EPA’s typical recommendation is maximum ventilation during installation and for at least 72 hours after it is completed.

For activities likely to “off-gas” pollutants, such as applying paints or finishes or installing flooring like carpeting, the EPA’s remodeling guide says to continue providing maximum ventilation to the space. The typical recommendation is to provide maximum ventilation both during installation and for at least 72 hours after installation is completed. A cleaning removes dust and debris from surfaces, but it does not replace airing out a freshly finished room, so plan the ventilation alongside the cleaning.

What does the federal lead rule mean if your home was built before 1978?

Short answer: Paid contractors who disturb painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 must be lead-safe certified, and the EPA lays out the cleanup steps.

According to EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting program, anyone paid to perform work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978 must be certified and use lead-safe work practices. The rule does not apply to homeowners doing projects in their own pre-1978 home, unless they rent it out, operate a childcare there, or flip houses. EPA’s lead-safe renovation guidance describes the final cleanup as mopping uncarpeted floors thoroughly, cleaning walls with a HEPA vacuum or a damp cloth, vacuuming all remaining surfaces with a HEPA vacuum, and wiping down with wet disposable cloths until they are clean. If you cannot tell how old the home is, EPA says it is safest to assume the work area has lead-based paint. Because the rule covers the contractors who do the work, ask yours how lead-safe cleanup is handled before you schedule a cleaning. State rules may add requirements, so confirm them with your contractor. This is general information, not legal or health advice.

Just finished a project? Tell us about it and we’ll send a free post-construction cleaning quote.

Should the contractor or a cleaning company do the final clean?

Short answer: It depends on your contract: some contractors include a basic cleanup, and a detailed cleaning is a separate step.

What a contractor’s cleanup covers depends on the contract, so read yours. The EPA’s guidance is clear on the principle: clean up the work site before occupants return. A post-construction cleaning picks up after that, with a detailed cleaning of dust and debris so the space is ready to use. Ask your contractor what their cleanup covers, then request a quote for the rest. If your home was built before 1978, remember to ask your contractor how lead-safe cleanup is handled.

When is the right time to book a post-construction cleaning?

Short answer: After the contractors finish and before you move in, list the property or hand it over.

Book the cleaning for the day that follows the end of the work, once tools, materials and debris are out. Share the date the project finishes when you request your quote, and we will look for a day that fits. If paint or flooring was just installed, plan some time for ventilation as well, because the EPA recommends maximum ventilation for at least 72 hours after installation.

What should you tell us when you ask for a post-construction quote?

Short answer: The type of project, the address and size of the space, the date the work ends and whether the home was built before 1978.

The more detail we have, the better the quote: what was done (for example a remodel, an addition or a new build), where the property is, how large the space is, and when the contractors finish. If you want extras such as basement cleaning, grout or organizing, mention them too. Our team replies within 24 hours on business days, and there is no obligation. We do not give a flat price, because the scope of each project is different.

Post-construction, deep or move-out cleaning: which one do you need?

Short answer: Post-construction follows building work, deep cleaning resets a lived-in home and move-out cleaning is for an empty property.

Think about the state of the space. If building work just ended, choose post-construction cleaning. If you live in the home and want a full reset, a deep cleaning is the better fit. If the property is empty and the keys are about to change hands, a move-out or move-in cleaning is designed for that. Not sure? Describe your situation in the quote form and we will recommend the right service.
